There was much to absorb with programmed days of the curator's vision. I do see the challenge as an educator leading and mentoring a creative direction with guidelines and still encouraging growth through group collaboration and creativity within a definative space, materials and equipment available, and timeframes. Soon I will capture and blog time spent of the Italian experience within the comfort of the upcoming rural French print lab sanctuary.

BUT, here is the beginning of the
The amazing Italian Road Adventure

This is the topic before I leave for France. I began in Lecce and drove through the Apennines mountains which are considered the "Spine of Italy". A good friend from New York met me in Santa Catarina and we rented a small roller skate of a car in Lecce for the excursion. The Apennines stretch more than 750 miles from the Ligurian Alps in the northwest down to the Cabria in the south, close to Sicily.

We started exploring the Apennines mountains from Lecce up to the Gargano Peninsula in Puglia. We drove on skinny scary half-paved roads through the mountain roads with literally hairpin turns to which some had no guard rails to Umbria Forest Parks. My friend was white-knuckled in the passenger seat as I drove the stick shift using mostly only second and first gears to navigate the upward climb. I do wish I could have photographed that particular drive as the views were amazing from what I could see from my peripheral vision. I feared to look directly at the steep descent inches outside my car door, but afterward, I felt titillated with the adrenaline and excitement of the challenge. (Although, I don’t believe my friend in the passenger seat enjoyed it much at all.)

We touched small amounts of Abruzzo to travel into Umbria and stayed as guests in two Agritourism farms. Our final destination was Ravenna in the Emilia-Romagna region. It was a week of traveling that was filled with magical places and people. I will detail specifically where we spent stayed in places that offered amazing opportunities to see and experience “a people and its current and past culture”. Below are preview photos of the week's tour and more details to follow on each location. More tales and photos to tell of this chapter of my European adventure.

Lecce

https://www.dawndaisleyprintimpressions.com/httpswwwweeblycomeditormainphp/lecce

https://www.dawndaisleyprintimpressions.com/httpswwwweeblycomeditormainphp/lecce#comments

Uncategorized

24-26 June 23 It has been a whirlwind of activity and intermittent wifi and access to the internet after I left Lecce to join the Italian Residency. Here I spent only two days until picked up for Art Residency in Santa Catarina.
I take a cab to my BnB and I am immediately disappointed. It is three stories up, with no air conditioning, and limited Wifi. There is also an excavation outside my window that is not happening over the weekend but starts on Monday, my last day there at 6 am with a bull-dozer scraping stone in a pit of what appears to be something of antiquity below that echoes. Thank goodness it was on my last day.

Lecce is a small but a clean and beautiful town in the Puglia area of Italy, where they wash the streets daily. The library is hosting an exhibition “Rara Herbaria”. I can not resist looking at printed pieces from the 15th -17th centuries hoping for them to reveal a technique that I have not seen. I amble through about 10 linseeds oiled rooms of floor to a high ceiling of bookshelves of original printed and handwritten books.

I am traveling back with the sense of the smells of old parchment, cotton papers, ink, and past years of micro dust on the books of long ago. The Collection is far beyond just botany but brings together both original and mono (single) editions of printed, handwritten, and drawn texts books, and journals with detailed drawings from centuries ago. This collection exhibits precious important rare botany books of the world on plants. While their focus was not very much on process and technique (dang) it does give a great point of view of the evolution of explorations in cataloging of flora and other plant life. Below I have added a slide show of sample images. If you are further interested in the exhibition, there is the link in bold.

The library cataloging of early exploration into logging and recording reminds me of “The Signature of All Things” written by Elizabeth Gilbert. The novel’s heroin lives through her work and research of moss (yes, just moss) and finds an understanding of love, the deeper mysteries of evolution, and dives into the spiritual, divine, and magical workings of the world and of course… herself.

Roma Day 2

https://www.dawndaisleyprintimpressions.com/httpswwwweeblycomeditormainphp/roma-day-2

https://www.dawndaisleyprintimpressions.com/httpswwwweeblycomeditormainphp/roma-day-2#comments

Uncategorized

Deciding to explore early morning to beat the heat and a small breeze for made me hopeful. Great efforts were made to obtain mercy for the accused, but Pope Clement refused to grant pardon. Bernardo was forced to watch the beheading of his family and then he was jailed.
